Hiring a Wedding Photographer? Don't Make This Mistake!

Hiring a professional photographer for your wedding is an incredible way to capture The Big Day. But with so many photographers to choose from and tight wedding deadlines, you may be tempted to hire a photographer after a quick review of their website and a simple email or text exchange.

Being in touch digitally may be a preferred way of connecting in general, and some photographers will be happy to accept jobs after such minimal interaction, but I’m begging you – don’t do it!

The truth is, photography is about so much more than capturing photos. It’s about having a rapport with someone... a chemistry that can be felt on a gut level. Weddings can be unpredictable at times – speedbumps may arise that you did not account for. In these moments, you want a photographer who is both experienced and helpful, someone who can step in at times to act as a supportive friend.

Here is one fail-proof way to make sure you choose a photographer you jive with: Have a phone conversation with them, or meet them in person!

Remember: It’s not just about who can take the prettiest photos within the smallest budget. This person is going to be with you on one of the most important days of your life... a busy and highly-scheduled day that may have some unexpected moments. You want a photographer who can be flexible enough to roll with the punches and who has the heart to be a pillar of support on your wedding day. By interviewing prospective photographers, you can more easily get to know them and get a sense of how they plan to assist you on your special day.

That’s why my #1 tip for hiring a great wedding photographer is to make sure you meet with your prospective hires over the phone or in person! Come prepared with questions that allow you to get to know their personality and approach. Get to know their values and what brought them to this career. Ask them to show you photos of a wedding from start to finish so you can get a better idea of how they will approach photographing your wedding.

Your wedding day will be one of the most thrilling days of your life. Interviewing your prospects is a sure-fire way to learn whether you and the photographer have the kind of chemistry that will be vital on your big day.
