5 Things You Need to Know When Planning Your Wedding
Weddings can seem like a huge ordeal. For most adults, it’s one of – if not THE – biggest event you will ever plan and host in your life.
Trying to organize ideas into a plan can feel like an absolute whirlwind, but one thing that can help ground you and give you some structure is knowing the key components of a wedding and how to go about achieving your own look, feel, and flair on such a momentous occasion.
Here are some key pieces to consider for your wedding, and our top tips for realizing your wedding goals and dreams.
Interview prospective photographers
My #1 tip for selecting the best photographer for your needs is getting on the phone with them. Asking just a few basic questions can tell you a lot about the person’s goals, photography style, and personality. You want to hire a photographer with whom you connect or “click” with; someone who feels like a friend who is willing to hear and understand your needs. If a phone conversation shows that you jive, a meeting is a next great step
Make sure you’re “in love” with your wedding venue
Your venue is the backdrop of your entire event. Take tours of venues to get a solid impression of the aesthetics, colors, and layout. While you’re there, interact with staff as much as possible and ask lots of questions. It’s especially helpful to know things like: all the options for indoor and outdoor settings; where different parts of the evening will take place (ceremony vs. reception); and more practical pieces like how many restrooms are available and whether there are special rooms for getting dressed. Be sure to also read reviews of venues online to hear first-hand experiences.
Prioritize yummy food - and lots of it
You’re throwing the biggest party of your life… and what’s a party without delicious food? Yes, it serves a practical matter of feeding folks you’re hosting for potentially several hours, but your choice of appetizers, drinks, entrees and desserts can also be a wonderful reflection of who you are as a couple, a way to express yourselves and make the day feel unique to you. The last thing you want is for guests to go home hungry, so err on the side of more food rather than less, and do account for guest food preferences and allergies.
Hire a DJ who feels like a friend
The truth is, a DJ can make or break your reception. Take the time to interview multiple DJs to find one you connect with and whose personality you enjoy. You’ll want a DJ who will listen to your musical tastes and desires while also being honest with you about what will work well for large groups and parties. You’ll want a DJ who is understanding but who can also work crowds onto the dance floor, have smooth transitions, and who can vibe with the energy in the room. If the vibes are off, everyone will feel it, so make sure you go with someone you feel natural and comfortable with, and who can share some video examples of their work before you hire them.
Go for memorable decor (and don’t forget about DIY ideas!)
Your wedding flowers, ceremonial details, linen colors, chair colors and types, table decor, wedding favors are all a fun way to express yourself and share pieces of yourself and the couple with your guest. The web is host to endless color schemes and ideas, especially in the DIY vein. Decor these days doesn’t have to cost a lot, and often the most economical ideas are the most creative and memorable. Have fun with the decor and make it your own. Your guests will take notice and feel the love and energy you put into each piece, helping them feel closer to you on your special day.
