Planning a wedding? For many, it’s become tradition to take photos with your significant other before the big day arrives. This “engagement photo session” is where you can wear your everyday clothes and be in a more natural, laid-back environment with your one-and-only before you tie the knot. Or you can choose to dress to impress and plan a more “extra” engagement shoot with super formal attire you don’t wear on a regular basis.

Between deadlines and extensive planning, you may consider skipping engagement photos to save yourself some time, but I strongly encourage you not to! Here’s why I recommend an engagement photo session to all my clients. 

1. It’s great practice.

Many people spend very little, or possibly zero, time in front of a professional photographer before celebrating a huge occasion like their wedding day. An engagement photo session can act as a dress rehearsal for getting you more comfortable in front of the camera. It’s a time to practice being in the moment with your partner while interacting and trying different poses that feel authentic to you.

2. It helps you connect with your wedding photographer. 

Don’t let your wedding day be the first time you interact with your wedding photographer! An engagement photo session can “break the ice” between you and your photographer and will allow you to get to know their personality, get familiar with their method and process, and generally be at ease with them. The more you feel cool, calm, and connected with your photographer, the more likely it is that your photos will look and feel breezy and natural.

3. They’re fun to display at your wedding.

For all the guests at your wedding who may not know you well, or even for those who do, putting up photos of your engagement session is a beautiful touch. For all the weddings I have attended, there’s just something really special about seeing the couple through photos, celebrating this monumental step in their relationship. Guests love to have that additional connection to the couple they’re celebrating, and it’s a chance to share with them a bit more about your journey as a couple.
